Byzantine Crucifix

I sculpted this crucifix as a three-dimensional, modern interpretation of a Byzantine icon of the crucifixion. I am fascinated by the simplicity of icons, how the figures are somewhat abstracted and rich with symbolism. In this crucifix, the passion, death, and resurrection are represented in the figure of Christ. With a peaceful demeanor and open eyes, he is alive and triumphant—yet he bears the wounds of his crucifixion. Following iconic tradition, Jesus’s willingness to suffer and die is demonstrated by his firm footing upon a platform; he is not hanging from the cross but standing upon it. While icons were intended to be aids in prayer, this crucifix is designed to be mounted on a processional cross and used in liturgical worship.
